Oct 5 - Lunch at Sal, Visiting the Gold Souk

We had a big mix of things today.  Distances in Dubai are pretty far and the traffic tends to be heavy so we are spending a lot of time in the car driving from place to place.  That gave us more opportunities to see the amazing skyline from very different locations and many other Dubai features,

and we saw the Burj Khalifa several times, and

the shops made of shipping containers.

We stopped at the Heritage Village.

We were greeted by a Arab greeting that included coffee.  Neither of us like coffee (detest it actually) but in the spirit of friendship we each drank our small cup (shudder).

We also visited a home that was furnished with period furnishings.

The Heritage Village is situated right alongside the Dubai Creek…which is much larger than creeks we have in the US.  It’s a saltwater creek/tidal inlet that extends 9 miles inland.  It was a natural port for trade and transport in the early days of settlement in the area.

While driving the area we saw some gaily painted storage bins…

and the Queen Elizabeth II, now a floating hotel permanently docked in Dubai.

Lunch was at the Sal restaurant at Burj Al Araba

…and it was a very special treat.  The food was great…

(including some truly amazing chocolate mousse),

and the décor understated and breezy.

After eating we walked the ground of the hotel...

After a visit to the aquarium we took a bit of a drive along the waterfront where there were more good views.

We also visited the spice market and

and the gold market.  A jaw dropping amount of gold.

We also could see the Dubai port from a far distance...

and had more views of the Dubai waterfront and skyline.

In the evening we went to see Le Perle.  It is a show similar to some of the Cirque de Soleil shows we have seen but it had a lot of water involved.  It was very good.
